RICHARD POWERS

ESTATE

LICENSING AND REPRODUCTION RIGHTS

I am pleased to be acting as licensing agent for the estate of Richard M. Powers (1921-1996), who brought fine art influences from abstraction and surrealism into science fiction illustration, and was a highly influential force in the field from the 1950s to the 1980s. Powers produced an estimated 1400 covers in almost all commercial genres, the vast bulk of them in science fiction. After studying art at the Mizen Academy, the Chicago Art Institute, and the University of Illinois at Chicago and enlisting in the Army during World War II, his first major art commission was a spectacular edition of Gulliver’s Travels in 1948, and he exhibited his fine art in yearly shows at the Rehn Gallery in New York. A close friend of Ian and Betty Ballantine, Powers' surrealistic science fiction covers became the house style for Ballantine Books, and he did more covers for Ballantine than any other publisher, although he worked for all of them, as well as for the major slick magazines. He moved to Ridgefield, Connecticut in 1954, where he stayed, for the most part, for the rest of his life. He died in Spain while visiting his daughter, at the age of 75.

For some years before his death, Jane Frank (Worlds of Wonder) had the honor of selling his original artworks, and since 1996, I have represented the estate in the licensing of Powers'  artworks. If you are interested in gaining reproduction rights from the estate for Richard Powers' images, for commercial or non-commercial use, please don't hesitate to contact me, Jane Frank, at wowart@wow-art.com or call 703 220-6234 for details on how that can be accomplished.

From time to time original works by Richard Powers become available on the secondary market. If I have any to offer they will be listed in the "Re-sales from Collectors" category.  The images shown below are not available for purchase, they are just examples to give you an idea of the range and variety of Powers' artistry.
