This is an original painting by Walter Velez (1939-2018) used to promote the publication of an omnibus collection of Randall Garrett's alternate history fantasy-mystery detective stories, published by Doubleday as a selection for the Science Fiction Book Club (SFBC) in 1983.  Book club members received a circular/booklet announcing and advertising upcoming titles and commissioned well-known artists - in this case, an artist already tapped to provide the cover - to provide an additional "advance" illustration to be used solely for the promotion. Handpainted in acrylic on stretched canvas, 24" x 17" and signed by Velez.
