Maurice Greiffenhagen: The World's Desire

This is an Original signed interior illustration appearing opposite page 7, of the 1st illustrated edition of the mythological omance novel co-written by H. Rider Haggard and Andrew Lang, published by Longmans, Green and Co,  1894.  The caption reads: “Too soon he saw that the roofs were smokeless and all the court was deep in weeds."  The story is a continuation of the Odysseus myth, in this version Aphrodite compels Odysseus to leave his ruined home in Ithaca in pursuit of Helen of Troy, his love before Penelope. Helen resides in Egypt during the time of the Mosaic Exodus, so Odysseus witnesses many of the plagues and miracles recorded in the Old Testament. The Longmans, London, 1894 edition features a new preface by Haggard and Lang as well as 27 illustrations by Maurice Greiffenhagen, this original unsigned. The Artwork is monochrome black and white, gouache and watercolor, charcoal and wash, image size 8" x 12") custom matted and framed under glass to 16” x 20”
