Intense, and beautiful Original signed illustration, appearing  opposite page 320 of H. Rider Haggard's adventure story "Swallow – A tale of the great trek" in the 1st edition published by Longmans, Green and Co. 1899.  The caption reads “He drew the sharp edge of the spear across the lashing”  - freeing the the title character, a Dutch girl raised in South Africa, "who soons finds herself face-to-face with a shipwrecked crew, the love of her life, a murderer who wishes to kidnap her, and the possibility of war in her region and homeland.”    The artwork is monochrome, gouache, charcoal and ink wash on board, the image c. 20" x 14" that has been custom framed under class to c. 31.5” x 24.5" and is signed bottom right
