Jerome Rozen: Aviator sketch

Original pulp art, pencil sketch, likely created in preparation for a cover illustration - for "The Popular" magazine c. 1928-1930, depicting an aviator or similar adventure figure done in conte' crayon on sepia paper, with highlights in "body paint" (opaque watercolor/gouache) 14.5"x 11.5".  The sketch includes a full figure, drawn dynamically - posed in motion - as well as a smaller sketch of a hand.   The work comes with a sample page of Rozen's original stationary (see photo) which - in addition to the stylistic characteristics of the art - provides the rationale for calling it a work by Rozen.  While clearly portions on the paper on the edges are lacking, the image overall is in fine condition for the age, and the fact that Rozen went to the effort of highlighting areas demonstrates that he, too, felt it worthy of preserving.   It's a distinctive piece, totally representative of the period.
