This is a rare opportunity to own the original "paste-up" sheet for a double page spread containing an essay and original artwork by Jack Gaughan, titled "The Spirit was Willing" (center section, page 38) in Cosmos Science Fiction Magazine issue for July 1977 (Vol 1, #2) Gaughan's essay described his early career and admiration for Will Eisner - who, at Gaughan's request, contributed a color centerfold for that issue. Back in the day, "paste-ups" were how magazines got printed: scans were made of identical sized sheets of heavy paper 13.5" x 19" (a size calculated to yield - after printing - double page sheets to trim and bind into a magazine of 11" x 8.5" size) to which the text and art was "pasted" (glued) down. Here, we have pasteup art in black-and-white by Gaughan that when published became blue - see photos! Gaughan was the Art Director for the magazine and contributed many images to the issues, and of course came up with the concepts.... This is a unique piece of science fiction literary history, from a publication period never to be seen again, and rarely seen or available for sale.
