Jack Gaughan: Cosmos T of C/Inside Cover Sept '77

This is a rare opportunity to own the original "paste-up" sheet for the Table of Contents and original art by Jack Gaughan for the inside cover of Cosmos Science Fiction Magazine issue for September 1977 (Vol 1, #3)   Back in the day, that was how magazines were printed: scans were made of identical sized sheets of heavy paper 13.5" x 19" (a size calculated to yield - after printing - double page sheets to trim and bind into a magazine of 11" x 8.5" size) to which the text and art was "pasted" (glued) down. Here, we have a full page artwork by Gaughan, done in black/white acrylic on paper mounted the full sheet, plus two more acetate overlay layers each with art, which were used to create the 3 color final artwork that was published in the magazine (see photos). This was an inexpensive way to create multi-color images (one color ech layer) without having to pay for a four-color scan.  Gaughan was the Art Director for the magazine and contributed many images to the issues, both full page (as here) and paste-up spot drawings - see table of contents.  The top of the sheet is covered with tracing paper containing printer instructions, with acetate overlay covering the art -   This is a unique piece of science fiction literary history, from a publication period never to be seen again, and rarely seen or available for sale.
