This is an original painting created for the cover of a mystery/romance novel by Phyllis A. Whitney, published by Hodder & Stoughton in hardcover, 1990.  Fred produced a number of book covers for this author, dubbed “the Queen of the American gothics” (The New York Times) and winner of an Edgar Award - and each shows his skill in rendering both historical and contemporary heroines in beautiful detail.  Here we have a young nineteenth-century flame-haired beauty, in a landscape format, painted in acrylic on illustration board, 16" x 22"  and comes signed.
