  • This is an original work by Donato - a "tryptich" - three works mounted as one.  It was a private commission that was part of our/Frank Collection's "Haggard Project" completed 2001.   Starting approximately 1998 we began commissioning artists to paint their interpretation of our favorite novel by H.Rider Haggard (see also Whelan and Miller paintings listed for sale) and Eric Brighteyes (Haggard's epic 1891 Icelandic saga romance) was one of our all-time favorites. Depicted here in the central panel is the Hero of the tale,  inspired by the 10th century Eric Thorgrimursson's quest to win the hand of Gudruda the Fair (left panel) . . only to have to contend with her wicked half-sister, the Sorceress Swanhild (right panel) - who also wants Eric.  And I bet you could have figured out which one was which without me identifying the panels! :)) The center panel, note, depicts Eric after the shipwreck that was Swanhild's plot to lure his ship and men to ruin, sparing Eric so she could have him to herself. Donato outdid himself in this major work, which he delivered framed as shown.  The total dimensions 40" x 74" with the central panel 34” x 36” and each side panel 36" x 15" all in Oil on paper mounted on Masonite (Donato's chief method!) with each panel signed.  I hesitate to offer this work of art, but space is going to be limited.  If other pieces sell I will keep it.  And if it sells then I am hoping it will be to a good home - because this is a major showstopper -  photos cannot do justice to the fineness of the work, scale and composition.  Donato was awarded 1st Place in the Art Renewal Center’s 2003 annual open salon competition for this work -  and the tryptich was also featured on the back cover of Spectrum 9: The Best of Contemporary Fantastic Art and included in Illustrators 45.  (note: while I could take it apart and sell and/or ship the paintings separately, likely I will be calling specialty Art packers so that it's packed and shipped properly (unless you want to pick it up in person with a van or whatever would accomodate it.)   Whatever the shipping fee that's estimated by the system - I will add to it, to see that it's done right.--or refund if it comes to less.
