This is the original cover painting for the novel by Catherine Cookson published by Corgi, 1980  (I show the published cover for reference) There are "men who can at times be stirred by the power and conflict of their own emotions to the point of shedding tears. Such a man was Abel Mason. Unhappily married to the shrewish Lena, he sought release in a love affair that soon ended in brutal tragedy"  Excellently done in "wraparound" landscape format in acrylic and gouache on illustration board, 10.25" x 14"  and comes with a label attesting to its authenticity signed by Pether's widow, mounted to the back. This book also was made into a movie, 1993. Pether excelled in montage renderings as well as portraiture to fit the story.
