I represented the estate of Dave Pether (1943-2021) and this is one of his originals that has come back to me for re-sale. James A. Michener was one mainstream, well-known author for which Pether received commisions for cover illustrations - among them, this non-fiction novel chronicling the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. This is the original art for the edition published by Corgi, 1985. (I show the cover for reference) It's a gorgeous scene, 16" x 11.25" handpainted in gouache and acrylic on illustration board - and it is now being sold framed (see photos) Pether excelled in these sorts of romantic scenes, requiriing realistic attention to detail. The painting comes with a label attesting to its authenticity signed by Pether's widow, mounted to the back.
