Original vintage book cover illustration for one of several wartime/combat novels relating to WW2 that Pether illustrated in his long career. This one identified in the artist's files as "Stalingrad" and publisher remains unsourced as of this listing. However, the subject matter and format clearly suggests this was created for a book cover - now we just have to find it! Essentially monochromatic in rendering, which perfectly captures the physical and psychological context of its title, and likely dating to the 1970s, this is painted in Acrylic and gouache on illustration board 11" x 16" and comes with a label attesting to its authenticity signed by Pether's widow, mounted to the back. Pether did more than a dozen such paintings by authors well-known for their thrilling military adventure novels. I am listing only a sampling, if you are interested in this genre and want to see ones not listed, contact me. But bear in mind every book cover illustration I offer is unique - so if you want this one, don't hesitate.
