In the 1980s Dave Pether started producing several paintings for the weekend British TV series called London Weekend Television (LWT) - well known for showing American films and TV show series as well as British ones. The images were used for intro titles as well as backgrounds for commercial breaks. Most would have been used 1983-1987, and several still have the acetate overly showing the titles - as this one does. "The Return of the Man from U.N.C.L.E.: The Fifteen Years Later Affair" was a 1983 American made-for-television action-adventure film based on the 1964–1968 television series The Man from U.N.C.L.E. starring Robert Vaughn and David McCallum reprising the roles they had originated on that program - and this painting would have appeared during ad/titles breaks - the text actually appears on two acetate overlays, which have a bit of damage from handling - but likely would be kept separately anyway, when framing.
the painting itself is in gouache and acrylic on illustration board, 12" x 16.5" in great condition, and comes with a label on the back attesting to authenticity, signed by Pether's widow.
