This is the original cover painting for the historical novel by Graham Masterton,  edition published (I believe) by Sphere, 1982 (I show the published cover for reference, but publisher is not listed) The novel depicts the life exploits of Collis Edmunds: "railroad entrepreneur, gambler, drinker, chauvinist and womanizer" and in the UK was published as "Railroad" - but in the U.S. as "Man of Destiny".  Painted in gouache and acrylic, it's a wonderful example of Pether's skill in depicting intriguing characters set against interesting backgrounds   Painted in gouache and acrylic on illustration board, 11" x 14.75" and comes with a label attesting to its authenticity signed by Pether's widow, mounted to the back. Comes with a label attesting to its authenticity signed by Pether's widow, mounted to the back.
