In the 1980s Dave Pether started producing several paintings for the weekend British TV series called London Weekend Television (LWT) - well known for showing American films and TV show series as well as British ones. The images were used for intro titles as well as backgrounds for commercial breaks. Most would have been used 1983-1987. "Malibu" was a trashy 1983 American made-for-television drama film notable mainly for it's all-star cast - featuring Susan Dey, Kim Novak, James Coburn, Richard Mulligan, Eva Marie Saint, Troy Donahue, Chad Everett, Jenilee Harrison, Valerie Perrine, Ann Jillian, and last but not least, George Hamilton (and you can ID some of those stars in this painting!) This is a big one, 16" x 22.5" and was hand-painted in gouache and acrylic on illustration board, plus there's a label attesting to authenticity signed by Pether's widow on the back. As you can see there are some letters missing from "Malibu" - this title was painted over the surface of the artwork, and through time, they peeled off. I imagine it wouldn't be hard to remove what's left of them, or else restore all the letters; either way the main images are totally fine, and it's fun piece of movie memorabilia - priced with a bit of "fixing" in mind!
