James A. Michener was one mainstream, well-known author for which Pether received commisions for several cover illustrations - among them this final painting that on the basis of the subject matter was likely was created for a title by James Michener, for Corgi in the late 70's to early 80s as either an alternate for "Return to Paradise" or "Hawaii" or "Tales of the South Pacific" but we are having difficulty in finding proof of publication.   In any case, It's a large, beauty of a painting,  done in gouache and acrylic on illustration board, c. 20" x 12" and comes with a label attesting to its authenticity signed by Pether's widow, mounted to the back.
