Stephen Fabian: "The Beast" (Ill Met in Lankhmar)

Here is one of Fabian's earlier B/W artworks, created for Fritz Leiber's famous sword and sorcery novella - actually a prequel -  recounting the meeting and teaming-up of his memorable and adventurous duo, Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, that appeared in Stuart Schiff's "Whispers", issue #13/14 from 1979.  It's a marvelous work by Fabian, one of his most dramatic and exciting. In inks on paper, 10" x 7" matted to 14.5" x 11" no frame - see photos for how it appeared in print, and the interesting notes on the reverse!Whispers was Schiff's well-known quarterly publication, first published  July 1973, that went on to become a more elaborate showcase for dark fantasy fiction . . . and there's hardly a fan that isn't familiar with it.   “Ill Met in Lankhmar” with Fabian's art also  was featured in Whispers III a collection in hardcover published 1979 by Doubleday.
